Pennies from Heaven: A Fundraiser for Ann Butler CANCELED
It's become necessary to cancel the party for Ann Butler (please read Ann's letter, below). If you've purchased tickets, you'll receive a refund in the next day or two.
Even though the party is canceled, donations can still be made to Ann's benefit account at First National Bank. Please make checks out to the Ann E. Butler Benefit Account and mail to First National Bank of Durango, PO Box 2910, Durango, Colorado, 81302.

To all my lovely friends:
I started writing this with the phrase "It is with a heavy heart ..." then I realized it made me sound like a politician, and we've got too much of that already! But I am sad to have to ask friends, who have put months of hard work and creativity into the fundraiser to help me pay medical bills, to cancel the party.
The greatest joy of my life is writing Neighbors, where I get to share the wonderful work so many of our local organizations and committed people do. As this fundraiser progressed, my editors began to worry that it gives the impression of journalistic impropriety for organizations I write about to participate in something that will result in money for me. We all know that it's caring friends who are doing this as individuals, but the appearance can be enough to cast suspicion on my objectivity as a reporter and columnist. I'm not willing to take that risk on something that means so much to me, and, I think, to our community.
I have already spoken to Mary Orsini and Gemma Kavanagh Mongelli, who came up with this generous idea at the start and have shepherded it through the summer. I have asked Scott Hagler to stop selling tickets. Brown Paper Tickets will refund the money for tickets already sold within the next couple days.
While it was deemed acceptable for me to keep the benefit account Linda Mack and Moni Grushkin set up for me at First National Bank of Durango, I'm not comfortable with comingling money from the problematic fundraiser situation with those funds clearly given by individuals, so we will be refunding all ticket sale monies.
As Mary said, at least I didn't have to wait until I was dead to find out how much people love me. When the wordy queen is caught speechless, it's an indicator of just how overwhelming the outpouring of generosity has been!
I thank you all from the bottom of my heart, and I look forward to seeing you at some of the other great parties in Durango.
